RACE REPORT:
After a half
an hour of tinkering, we decided upon an oval track setup w/banked turns and a chicane right in front of the drivers’
stand. Delta's surface smoothness and grip were superb - no doubt some real intense racing was bound to happen!
In the 1/8th
qualifers, the three Kyoshos started on fire - with a clean start from Ray, Dave and Ian, the three bikes came abreast
into turn one just like a real Daytona race and there were several close passes for the lead in the first three laps! However
after a devastating crash on lap 8, Ian retired due to a stripped servo gear while Dave and Ray were left to battle for first.
With unbeatable lap times Ray ultimately took the TQ with his 300-powered direct steerer. In the 1/5th qualifiers,
after a great start Ian took an early lead while Kevin and Ken eased their way into driving down the banked track. After a
couple of laps Kevin began to settle into a “groove”, whereas Ken suffered from a loose crash bar problem early
on. When the track marshals couldn’t find the crash bar, Ken decided to run anyway but was too far behind to catch up.
Despite a late charge from Kevin, Ian ultimately took this one.
In
the 1/8th Main,
Ray crashed in the first lap which left Dave and Ian dicing for the lead. Dave suffered from a big crash later on in
the second lap, leaving Ian alone in first. After the bad start Ray went on his usual charge and effortlessly passed Ian on
lap 6, only to crash again late in the race and eventually retire on lap 29. Ian inherited the lead and managed to hold 4
laps over Dave “Speedy” Gonzales to take an unexpected win. In the 1/5th Main Ken did not start, leaving
Ian and Kevin to duel it out. Ian, looking for the clean sweep of A-Main wins, looked bleak at the start with Kevin taking
a half lap lead. But after settling back into the driver’s stand he was able to overtake on lap 7 and take
the win.
